The Falls of Clyde - the Iron Hull

Two types of soldering are used to assemble the parts of the ships hull, soft and hard solder.  The soft soldering is undertaken with a resistance soldering unit needing power to the part to be soldered and the carbon tip for heating. The silver soldering requires a flame and a means of holding the parts together on a soldering board.  The soldering board has on one side a ‘Ceramic honeycomb board’ with wire dogs to hold the parts for silver soldering and on the other a ‘Vermiculux board’ with integral holding clamps. The tools are made with a brass core to attach the wire at one end and the carbon tip at the other, which is encased in Vermiculux and a hard wood tube.
