The half model is used to create the half frame templates for frames 40 to 80, the subject of the project.  These in turn are used to form around the angle brass for the actual frames, in the frame making jig.    The Frames making jig comprises of a flat plate with adjustable fingers that can be set to accommodate any shape of full frame. It also has provision to take a brass setting plate and an aluminium soldering plate for assembling each of the ships frames.

The drawings from Practical Shipbuilder (1916 edition) showing the full size method of forming a steel ‘Z’ frame angle to the shape of a ships frame.  The same method would have been used for the red hot angle iron frames for the Falls of Clyde, two angle irons being riveted together to form the ‘Z’ form in 1878.
